Miss Marple wore a black brocade dress, very much pinched in round the waist. Mechlin lace was arranged in a cascade down the front of the bodice. She had on black lace mittens, and a black lace cap surmounted the piled-up masses of her snowy hair. She was knitting -- something white and soft and fleecy.

-- Agatha Christie, from "The Tuesday Night Club"

I began knitting in the early 1980's when I saw some cute Christmas sweaters in a magazine. I wanted to make them for my niece and nephew. Unfortunately, I had no one living near me who could teach me to knit -- my great-aunt was a fabulous knitter, but she lived 2,000 miles away. So, I did the next best thing. I bought a good how-to book and learned to knit from it. I made the sweaters in time for my sister to have the kids' annual Christmas photo taken in them. It really got me started on knitting, and I've been at it ever since.

There are lots of ways to find terrific knitting projects. You can either use a pattern that someone else designed, or you can design a pattern yourself. Once you've learned the basics, designing knitting isn't that hard. Never underestimate yourself! Sweaters, for instance, are really pretty basic in form, modified rectangles for the most part. Simple geometric shapes will get you a long way in knitting. Just add some pretty color, cable or lace patterns on top of basic shapes, and voilá! You're a designer.

I tend to knit things that you can't buy in stores. There are plenty of basic sweaters you can buy for reasonable prices, so I don't see any reason to bother with knitting something I could just as easily buy from Lands' End. Instead, I knit with color, texture and unusual yarns, making pieces that you can't find just anywhere.

Fibers. I love them. So I also do other fiber arts, crocheting and quilting. My quilting journal is online, too.

Here are some of the things I've knitted. For some of my designs, I've written patterns and share them here. If I've knitted someone else's design, I give information on what pattern I used and where I found it.

These pages will be updated fairly often, so if you're interested in a pattern check back from time to time.
